Opening our vegan restaurant, Healthy Substance, back in 2018 was truly a dream come true. For years Patricia, our valiant founder, had been cooking for family and friends, her nearest and dearest. She cooked the food she loved for the people she loved. With the establishment of Healthy Substance, she was able to introduce the wider community into this fold and share her passion for wholesome food with Garfield Ridge.

With our inspiration stemming from our valiant leader, we’d like to discuss what drives us to make the food we love so much here at Healthy Substance.

Celebrating our culture.

There is no better (or tastier!) way to pay homage to our heritage than through the sharing of food. Recipes, tips and tricks of the kitchen that have been passed down from generation to generation are cherished and celebrated on a daily basis. Now, we feel blessed that we are able to share this with you at Healthy Substance. Our food is a reflection of how we were raised and where we are from – bright colors shine through our fresh produce, and our flavor palette is bold and plentiful. We are proud to be able to share the flavors of our family’s Mexican heritage with you and grateful that we get to continue to cook the food we love every day in our vegan restaurant.

Bringing people together.

The importance of family and friendship are deeply embedded in our culture, and one of our favorite ways to show this is to gather for a meal. The sharing of food has always been a part of the human story – it’s an opportunity to spend time together during preparation and a chance to check in and spend quality time with each other during the actual meal. Healthy Substance has given us the means to extend an invitation to our family table to you all. We love to see you gather at our restaurant, socialize with one another and enjoy the food that is so dear to our hearts.

Vegan food is good for the soul.

Here at our vegan restaurant, we understand that people choose this lifestyle for a multitude of reasons. Some partake for the animals, or for the sustainability of our planet, and others take part for nutritional purposes in an attempt to lead a healthier life. The core elements of a vegan diet, being fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds are packed with beneficial fiber, vitamins and minerals. Fortunately for us, the elements that make up the core flavors of the food we love to cook fall into these categories – beans, corn, peppers, herbs, tomatoes, avocado. With a little recipe experimentation and flavor manipulation, we were able to keep the integrity of the traditional Mexican cuisine while offering the community a healthier, plant-based alternative.

If you’re a bit of a sweet tooth, come and try our tasty Chia P smoothie – packed with mango, banana, oatmeal, chia seeds, agave sweetener and coconut milk. Or if your tummy needs filling with something savory, go for our Impossible Carne Asada Burrito – we’d love to see if you can tell the difference!

We’ve got something to satisfy every type of craving, and we truly believe the love for what we do shows through in the vegan food we have to offer.
